Walsenburg was called the “City Built on Coal” during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and nowhere else in Spanish Peaks County will give you as much opportunity to learn why than the Walsenburg Mining Museum.

Follow the battles between the coal miners and mine operators, examine artifacts associated with the mining industry, and walk among dioramas depicting mining life. At this museum, exhibits highlight memories from more than 100 mining camps in Huerfano County home to thousands of miners and their families.

Learn about Mary "Mother" Jones, a famous fighter for workers’ rights, who came to Colorado to help the colliers during their strike. At 80 years old, she was arrested and incarcerated in the Walsenburg jail. Upon her release, she headed to Washington, D.C. To testify about the deplorable conditions endured by the coal miners.

Learn the Walsenburg story of Bob Ford, killer of outlaw Jesse James, and much more!

The Walsenburg Mining Museum also displays detailed genealogical material for those searching for their roots and maintains a gift shop offering books, maps, other informational materials, souvenirs, and keepsakes.
